My Kind of House

I’m always a little wary about tourist-magnet restaurants, but House of Nanking actually serves good food that is not quite Chinese but not offensively Americanized either. The fun part of eating there is ordering. Instead of looking at the menu, you can ask the owner to come over and you tell him generally what you want (i.e. kind of protein/veggie, spicy or non-spicy, stir-fried or deep fried, etc) and then he’ll surprise you. “Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it.” I’ve been there twice and admittedly one time was better than the other, but I’m never terribly disappointed. I think the beef and chicken dishes are a little better than the seafood options. I also didn’t like their lemon-flavored dish.  Spicy stuff is decent. Although the restaurant is pretty cramped and has the “hole in the wall” feel, it’s not exactly the cheapest Chinese food considering it’s proximity to Chinatown. My biggest complaint is the long line that more often than not develops outside. Rain or cold… people (mostly tourists but a fair share of locals) know this place and want to eat at this place. Go figure!
