One of the best restaurants in OC’s Little Saigon, in my humble opinion, for broken rice (aka Cơm tấm) is Com Tam Thuan Kieu. The restaurant is located in a busy Vietnamese shopping plaza filled with a variety of different businesses catering to the Vietnamese clientele. There is a large grocery store, several cell phone shops, sandwich places, to go deli’s, a bank, and a variety of different restaurants. Com Tam Thuan Kieu doesn’t look all that impressive from the outside, and once you step inside, it’s still not much in terms of ambiance, but the menu is quite extensive offering several pages of combination rice plates, all for under $8.
Cơm tấm literally means broken rice, and it is typically served with a variety of different ingredients. The usual combination served most widely includes grilled pork , shredded pork, a steamed egg quiche, and a side of soup.
My favorite combination has the grilled pork chop and steamed egg quiche, but I also like the the fried soybean cake filled with shrimp and the shrimp paste on sugar cane (the two things featured in the forefront of the picture above). I definitely like the variety of different things that you can choose from at this restaurant, but variety aside, the food really tastes very good. It is all well-made and delicious, and the very best part is how cheap it all is. You can’t beat the price.
Granted, the place could use a little bit of renovation, because the walls, tables and chairs look a little worn and run down with age, but all in all, if you are just looking for a delicious and filling meal, I would definitely recommend checking this place out.
