NYC’s Most Famous Halal Cart

Halal Guys Food Cart

The halal food carts are as ubiquitous as the hot dog carts in New York City, but everyone, local or tourist, knows and frequents the Halal Guys food cart on 53rd St and 6th Ave.  It’s THE place to go especially after a late night out drinking and partying.  I remember coming here all the time back in the day, and I was always amazed how the line seemed to get longer the later (or earlier depending on your frame of reference) it was.  It could be 5am in the morning and there would be 50+ people waiting to get their choice of halal meat over rice.

Pdho and I had arrived into NYC pretty late, so since we were hungry and staying only a couple blocks away, I decided to take him over so he could see what all the hoopla was about.  As we were walking over, we randomly bumped into Kung Fu Panda who was also visiting NYC from the Bay Area.  Talk about a small world… but that only shows how popular this place is that out of towners are finding their way over to give it a try.

Chicken and Lamb Combo

We ended up getting the Chicken and Lamb combo which was served with some pita bread and over some orange rice.  The real key to the meal is the red and white sauce (which hasn’t been added yet when the picture was taken).  The white sauce tastes like ranch dressing and the red sauce is a spicy sauce of some sort.  I have no idea what is in the sauces, but the combination of both really makes this simple looking platter taste much fancier than it looks.

It’s definitely worth checking out.  The food is pretty good, but I think it probably tastes even better after a night of enebriation.  Although I haven’t tried it, there is actually another cart just across 6th. Ave. which looks like it’s run by the same guys wearing the same yellow T-shirts.  There is never as long of a line over there, but I imagine it tastes just as good.

You got the right plate… but the place across the st. IS NOT the same dudes. Trust me, not as good. They dress like them to fool people into thinking they’re the same guys. They ain’t.

Weirdly enough, the gyros are just average at this place (even though it’s the same meat). The platter is where it’s at. There is a gyro guy in Chelsea around 26th and 7th st-ish that is the BOMB.

White sauce is actually supposed to be a Tatziki like type sauce (which is served on traditional gyros). It’s not quite Tatziki, but it’s not straight mayo either. It’s horrible by itself but with that RED HOT SAUCE… booo yaaaa!!! The hot sauce is the bomb. But it needs to be mixed with the white and boom!
