BBQ in Lisboa

Pdho Waiting for Food
Hubster Waiting for Food

Food is a critical component to any successful vacation in my book. I have to admit that the food has teetered between good and average while traveling through Spain and Portugal. One of the notable highlights in Lisbon is this small neighborhood Portuguese BBQ take out place called Frangasqueira Nacional. I stumbled upon it on TripAdvisor and since it was within walking distance from where we were staying and open at 11am, Hubster and I headed over to pick up food since ElleC and WhyEm were recovering from a long night enjoying the Lisbon nightlife.

It was a tiny space and most of the real estate was taken up by the kitchen area which included a huge grill with an assortment of meat sizzling on top. The grill master, who I assume is also the owner, spoke English pretty well and helped us navigate the small menu.

We ordered the Mista #2 which included a 1/2 chicken, 3 sausages, and 6 ribs for the tidy little price of 9 euros. We also added on the tomato salad, basmati rice and potato chips for a total of 15.50 Euros. Truly a bargain!

Admittedly everything was pretty salty (but then a lot of the food in Lisbon has been that way.). However the flavor was spot on and all the meat was very well cooked. The chicken, surprisingly enough, was not dry and had a nice BBQ taste to it. The sausage was juicy and fatty, but what I probably liked the least only because the saltiness was a bit overwhelming. The BBQ ribs were my favorite in large part because if the smoky flavor. I helped myself to 2 of them.

Side Dishes
Tomato Salad, Basmati Rice, & Potato Chips

The tomato salad was equally delicious and offered some much needed balance to the meal. It was seasoned simply with olive oil, vinegar, salt and herbs. The rice and potato chips were good but nothing particularly different from the usual preparation.

All in all, this was one of the best gems we discovered during our Lisboa excursion. It gets major points for being a no frills take out place that serves great food at a super reasonable price. I would highly recommend checking it out if you’re ever in the area.
