Frutos do Mar em Lisboa

Solar Dos Presuntos

I kicked off my sabbatical with a visit to Portugal, and one of the better restaurants we went to was Solar Dos Presuntos which was highly reviewed restaurant on TripAdvisor and recommended by a number of friends of friends. ElleC, WhyEm, Hubster and I enjoyed a wonderful Portuguese meal which to this day still is one of the highlights of Lisbon.

Tank Full of Lobsters

I don’t know what it is in the waters of Portugal, but everywhere we went, we saw ginormous lobsters including some different albeit funny looking brethren.  There was an aquarium full of a whole variety of shellfish that helped emphasize the focus of the restaurant’s menu.

Combinado especial (presunto pata negra, paio e queijo)

We started with the Special Combination which was a plate of pata negra cured ham, paio cured pork and cheese.  The pata negra cured ham was super fatty as jamon iberico (what the Spaniards call it) usually is but always tasty.

Dourada grelhada c/ batata a murro e esparregado

We ordered the grilled gilthead bream with roasted potatoes “a murro” and spinach puree.  I have actually never had gilthead bream except in Spain (specifically Barcelona) and Portugal, but I really enjoy the juiciness of this particular white fish.  It’s meaty, flavorful, and is really tasty when grilled.

Arroz negro de chocos, vieira, gambas, cogumelos e mexilhão

Admittedly, the blackness of this dish probably shrouds the tastiness of this paella-like dish.  The squid-ink colored rice was mixed with cuttlefish, scallops, prawns, mushrooms and topped with mussels.

Arroz de lagosta e gambas

Admittedly, I can’t remember much about this dish except that had lobster, prawn and rice but given that combination of ingredients and how good the other dishes were, I would bet this was equally good.

Although, my review on Solar Dos Presuntos is not as detailed as I would expect it to be, it was almost a year ago.  However, I remember it being one of the better meals and definitely worth capturing, so I felt like the pictures and experience should be shared even if in a limited way.  One thing for sure is that this restaurant should be on anyone’s list if they’re looking for a good restaurant in the heart of Lisbon.
